Leading Utilities and App Vendors Enable Easy and Secure Access to Customer Energy Data
San Diego, Calif., January 30, 2017–The Green Button Alliance (GBA), which fosters the development, compliance, and wide-spread adoption of the Green Button standard, today announced that since its launch two years ago at the “Birth of the Green Button Ecosystem” event—which was hosted by GBA member San Diego Gas & Electric® (SDG&E)—its members have been busy educating the industry on the benefits of the Green Button energy data-access standard and actively expanding the Green Button ecosystem. Today, GBA members, comprised of leading utilities and vendors, are offering proven Green Button platforms that enable residential and commercial customers to easily access and securely share their energy usage data to better-manage home and building resource consumption. This week in DistribuTECH Booth #2642 and during panel discussions, members of the Green Button Alliance will educate attendees on the broad capabilities of the Green Button standard. The Green Button Alliance will also hold its Annual Members Meeting to facilitate continued education and utility, vendor, and consumer adoption of standardized Green Button technology around the world.
“Utilities worldwide are seeking cost-effective ways to strengthen customer engagement and provide access to customer energy data in ways that ensure customer privacy,” said Barry Haaser, executive director, Green Button Alliance. “Members of the Green Button Alliance are already fulfilling this industry need by enabling a large number of third-party applications and services that use the Green Button Connect My Data standard.”
Green Button Ecosystem Benefits Consumers, Commercial Buildings, and Solar Installations
GBA members are providing their residential and commercial customers with easy access to their energy usage information while enabling them to securely share their data with third-party web and mobile applications to assist them in efficiently managing their energy consumption. For the commercial building sector, access to a single, standardized Green Button data format across utilities offers enormous time-savings and reporting-efficiency benefits; as facility managers have historically had to access utility data in various formats for multiple buildings across jurisdictions, as noted in this new video. For the solar market, utility-provided Green Button data are also highly beneficial to, and sought-after, by both consumers and vendors. GBA members offer a variety of innovative solutions that leverage customer energy usage data to more-quickly and -accurately evaluate potential solar projects or to monitor existing installations.
Green Button Alliance Activities During DistribuTECH:
Barry Haaser, executive director, GBA will speak on the “Safely Unlocking the Value of Consumer Data” panel at the Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative’s (SGCC) 2017 Consumer Symposium,“Beyond the Grid: Connecting Tomorrow’s Consumers,” co-located with DistribuTECH from 2:00-2:45pm, Monday, January 30th, 2017.
The GBA will exhibit in Booth #2642, located in the center of the Exhibition Hall at DistribuTECH, from January 31 – February 2. GBA members will be on-hand to provide information about the Green Button standard and an educational demonstration will be offered by GBA member London Hydro; the first utility to make Green Button data available via a cloud-based implementation.
The GBA Annual Members Meeting will be held in San Diego on February 1, 2017, from 7:30-9:30am.
GBA board member Christopher G. Irwin of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will speak on the “Grid Modernization at the Convergence of Energy and Information” panel February 1, 2017, from 2:00-3:00pm, in Room 32AB.
